[Field Story] Supreme Court of Nepal decides to allow marriage registration for LGBTQ couples

Nepal's Supreme Court has ordered the government to provisionally allow LGBTQ couples to register their marriages until amendments to LGBTQ laws are revised.

Earlier on the 7th, nine people, including Pinky Gurung, President of the Blue Diamond Society, an LGBTQ rights advocacy group for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, filed a public interest lawsuit demanding recognition of equal rights for LGBTQ couples.

Following a Supreme Court decision in 2007, the Nepalese Constitution recognized LGBTQ rights as fundamental human rights. At the time, the Supreme Court also ordered that all discriminatory laws be amended or repealed and for same-sex marriage to be legalized.

According to Gurung, there are about 300 gay and lesbian couples in Nepal who have been publicly recognized for their marriage, and there are hundreds of couples who do not want to appear publicly in society due to the lack of marriage related laws.

"Through the Supreme Court's groundbreaking order, more couples will gain strength as they work to get their relationships publicly and legally recognized," she said.

May Nepal now become a nation that calls upon your name and receives salvation, and resolving itself to God may it no longer dirty itself, but rise up as a nation that seeks only your kingdom and will.
