[Field Story] Turkiye, 544 people arrested from ‘FETO’ for the 2016 coup

(Istanbul = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Dong-ho = Turkish authorities announced on the 14th (local time) that a large number of members of the FETO (Fethullah Gulen terrorist organization) organization, which was identified as the mastermind behind the attempted coup in Turkye in 2016, have been arrested.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya Turkiye said that as a result of a joint operation with prosecutors, the National Intelligence Service (MIT), and the police, 544 members of the FETO organization were arrested in 62 regions, including Ankara, Bursa, and Antalya.

It was found that they also took the employment exam for government and public institutions under the direction of FETOs superiors.

Additionally, some were found to have tried to avoid authorities by communicating using encrypted communication programs and public phones.

FETO, a group that follows American Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen, is pointed out as the mastermind behind the coup attempt that took place in Türkiye on July 15, 2016.

After the coup was foiled, the Turkiye government has requested the United States to extradite Gulen.
