[Today’s Prayer] Fire at Indian hospital… 10 newborns dead, 16 in critical condition

A fire broke out in a neonatal ward at a hospital in India, killing 10 babies and seriously injuring 16 others.

According to India's NDTV and other sources on the 16th (local time), a fire broke out at Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, about 450 km south of the capital New Delhi, at around 10:45 p.m. the previous day.

Local fire officials said there were 49 newborns at the hospital at the time of the accident, and the fire killed 10 people and seriously injured 16 people who were being treated at other hospitals.

They also explained that the fire started in the hospital's neonatal unit and appeared to be caused by a fault in a machine that increases oxygen levels in the air.

The Uttar Pradesh government said it had conducted a safety audit of the hospital in February and a fire drill in May, adding, "The cause of the fire will be investigated and if any defects are found, strict action will be taken against those responsible."

In May, in Delhi, India, a fire broke out in an oxygen tank at an infant hospital, killing six newborns.

We pray especially for the Church in India. May it be a holy Indian Church that will continue to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ in the midst of difficult circumstances and persecution, and may it be a holy Indian Church that will preach the Lord to the millions of Muslims and Hindus in the land of India.
