The Georgian National Assembly passed the 'Family Values ​​and Protection of Minors Act' banning propaganda against sexual minorities at the third and final reading (deliberation) on this day.

Reuters explained that this bill bans the use of the rainbow flag representing sexual minorities and provides a legal basis for censoring movies and books.

Russia's TASS news agency reported that under this bill, registration of marriages other than those between a man and a woman, adoption of minors by homosexual couples, and sex reassignment surgery are prohibited.

The European Union (EU) and human rights groups are criticizing this bill, which was passed under the leadership of the ruling party 'Georgia Dream', saying it suppresses sexual minority rights.

The West is wary of Georgia's recent moves toward pro-Russia.

Russia also bans the LGBT human rights movement, labeling it extremist. Georgia's ruling party passed a Russian-style media and non-governmental organization (NGO) control law in May amid opposition protests.

Some analyze that Georgia's Dream made this decision to rally conservative Orthodox-based supporters ahead of the general elections on the 26th of next month.
