[Today's Prayer] Hamas Leader Sinwar also eliminated… Iran announces strong response

The Israeli military has killed Yahya Sinwar, the top leader of the political bureau of the Palestinian armed group Hamas. The death of the Hamas leader, who had not revealed his whereabouts since leading the surprise attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7 last year, also known as the "Al-Aqsa flood operation," has brought the war in the Gaza Strip to another turning point. Iran, which has supported Hamas, has announced a strong response, saying, "Resistance will intensify."

On the 17th (local time), the Israeli military announced in a statement that, "After a year of tracking by Israel and Shin Bet (intelligence agency), the Southern Command eliminated Sinwar in the southern Gaza Strip the day before." The Israeli Army's 828th Brigade killed three Hamas members and operatives in the southern Gaza Strip on the 16th, and conducted a DNA test on them to confirm the identity of one of them as Shinwar.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz also said in a statement, "Shinwar, the murderer responsible for the massacre and atrocities of October 7 last year, was killed by our military," and claimed that it was "a great military and moral achievement and a victory for the entire free world against Iran's 'evil axis.'" He added, "The Gaza operation will continue for years to come."

Shinwar was the architect of the 'Al-Aqsa flood' operation on October 7 last year. He took over the position of Hamas political director from Ismail Haniyeh, who died in the Iranian capital Tehran on July 31, and had continued the war in the Gaza Strip. However, his whereabouts were unknown. The Hamas political directorate is in Qatar, but Shinwar had not been active publicly. On the 7th, Israeli media also reported that “Shinwar is alive and well.”

With the death of Shinwar, Hamas, which has lost its center of gravity, is expected to suffer a blow not only to its war capabilities but also to its organizational operations and governance of the Gaza Strip. Hamas and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah, the two key players in the pro-Iranian “Axis of Resistance” in the Middle East, are now without a leader to confront Israel. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli bombing in Lebanon on the 27th of last month.

In a speech that evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “Hamas will no longer rule the Gaza Strip,” and “The people of Gaza have finally had a chance to escape Hamas’ tyranny.” He also emphasized to the families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, “This is a critical moment. We will do everything we can until everyone returns.”

Iran has threatened another round of retaliation. Iran's UN Ambassador Amir Saeed Irabani warned on Tuesday that the killing of Sinwar would "intensify the spirit of resistance."
