[Today's Prayer] Lebanese Prime Minister appoints 24 ministers… Formation of formal cabinet after 2 years

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam appointed 24 new ministers in each ministry on the 8th (local time), forming a formal government after about 2 years.

The Lebanese Presidential Office announced on X (former Twitter) that President Joseph Aoun signed a cabinet formation plan with 24 ministers led by Prime Minister Salam.

The background to President Aoun, who is considered to have a pro-Western stance, being able to form a new government exactly one month after being elected on the 9th of last month and taking office is the weakening of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah during the war with Israel.

In particular, although the list of ministers did not include anyone directly connected to Hezbollah, Hezbollah and Parliament Speaker Nabi Berri accepted it as is.

Previously, Lebanon had not elected a president due to severe factional conflict since former President Michel Aoun ended his six-year term in October 2022, and in the meantime, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who cooperates with Hezbollah's parliamentary speaker Berri, has been acting as interim head of government.

However, after Israel and Hezbollah entered into a ceasefire in November last year, signs were detected in Lebanese politics that Hezbollah's political influence was noticeably weakening.

Last month, during the presidential election process, Hezbollah's preferred candidate, Suleiman Frangié, suddenly resigned in support of Aoun, and when President Aoun nominated a new prime minister, Salam, former Prime Minister Mikati was ousted, contrary to Hezbollah's wishes.
