[Today’s Prayer] Sudanese government recapture capital city after a year… End of civil war still early”

Fighting is intensifying in Sudan, where civil war is ongoing, as government forces launch an offensive to retake key strategic locations after more than a year of fighting.

The conflict and discord between the Sudanese government forces and the Rapid Support Forces escalated into a civil war in April 2023. The Rapid Support Forces gained momentum by capturing Ward Medani in December 2023, eight months after the civil war. However, in recent months, the government forces have reportedly launched a counterattack, causing the situation to change.

During the civil war, both the government forces and the RSF have been criticized by the international community for committing war crimes such as massacres and violence against civilians. In particular, the RSF has been notorious for summary executions of civilians, looting, and organized sexual assault. The United States and the United Nations have placed the RSF leader Dagalo on the sanctions list, claiming that the RSF committed genocide.

So far, more than 28,000 people have died in the civil war in Sudan, and 14 million people, 30% of the population, have become refugees, leaving their homes in search of safety. In addition, many people are suffering from hunger in various places, and humanitarian disasters are continuing.

However, it is difficult to say when the civil war will end. Government forces have recently launched a counteroffensive and are gaining control of the northern, central and eastern regions, but the rapid response force still holds a firm grip on the western and southern regions, including the Darfur region, widely known as the site of the worst genocide tragedy of the 2000s.

But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. (Matthew 13:23)

We hear of the ongoing civil war in Sudan as government forces are on the offensive, retaking key positions.

Heavenly Father, we lift up to You the countless lives suffering in the ongoing civil war in Sudan. We ask You to have compassion on the 14 million people who have been displaced, and who groan in hunger and despair.

Let the seed of the gospel be sown in the land of Sudan, so that it may grow in good soil and bear abundant fruit.

Heal the wounds and hatred of civil war with the love of the gospel, and plant the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ among the people of Sudan.

May the light of the gospel reach the scattered refugees, that they may embrace spiritual hope and live in newness of life.

Lord, allow the global church to serve and pray for the refugees of Sudan, and allow the African church to reach Sudan with the gospel, so that the Sudanese people may be raised up as ministers of the gospel to the nations!
